Individual Health Insurance in Wisconsin (WI)

Individual health insurers are allowed to decline your application for individual health coverage based on a medical problem. However, there is an assistance program for those who cannot get coverage through Wisconsin Health Insurance Risk Sharing Plan. If you have a pre-existing condition, individual insurers can impose an exclusion period of no more than two years and can also attach an elimination rider to the policy. Pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition, but genetic information cannot. There is no creditable coverage under individual policies. Your insurance will not be cancelled if you become sick; but if the company quits providing individual coverage in the state, it will be cancelled. The price of an individual health policy can be based on your health and other factors.

Group Health Insurance in Wisconsin (WI)

Regulations for group health insurance in Wisconsin provide that provided you are eligible, you cannot be declined or charged more because of a health problem. Group insurers must include the whole employee group when offering coverage. Due to life changes involving family or job loss, you may be entitled to special opportunities for group coverage. An employer can wait to offer group health insurance to a new employee. A new HMO can impose an affiliation period also. Group insurers can look back at the prior six months of your medical history to determine if you have any pre-existing conditions. In the presence of one, they can impose an exclusion period of no longer than 12 months. If you have maintained continuous coverage, without a lapse of more than 63 days, you are entitled to creditable coverage. There are several state governments which have removed protections from their employee group coverage; you should contact your employer to check for your inclusion.
