Individual Health Insurance in Washington (WA)
Individual health coverage can be refused to you due to a health problem or history of problems. If you have been refused individual insurance, you can apply for Washington State Health Insurance Pool. There are some situations where the individual insurer will be required to offer insurance, however. Newborn, adopted, and disabled children have special coverages under individual health policies. If an insurance company has fulfilled their maximum number of enrollees, they can decline your application. For pre-existing conditions, the maximum length of an exclusion period is nine months. Pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition. There are several circumstances in which you will be given credit for prior coverage toward your exclusion period. If you will be without insurance coverage for 63 or more days by the time your new individual policy begins, you may face a nine-month exclusion period. The costs of premiums cannot be based on your health but are determined by adjusted community rating. If you get sick, your insurance cannot be cancelled.
Group Health Insurance in Washington (WA)
Group health insurance cannot be denied based on a health problem, provided you are eligible for group coverage. If you have life changes relating to family or job loss, you may be eligible for more opportunities for group coverage. A new employer can wait to offer group insurance. Group insurers can look back at your medical history for the prior six months before coverage. In the presence of a pre-existing condition, the insurance company can impose an exclusion period, the lengths of which vary with the type of group coverage. Group plans can also impose universal waiting periods for specific conditions. If you have had continuous coverage for nine months through a small employer or for three months from a similar plan, you will be awarded creditable coverage.
