Individual Health Insurance in South Dakota (SD)

For individual insurance coverage, your application can be denied based on a medical problem. In the presence of a pre-existing condition, the new insurance company can place an exclusion period of 12 months maximum or can attach an elimination rider to the policy. If you had continuous coverage without a lapse of 63 days or longer, you will not meet with an exclusion period. What counts for creditable coverage is somewhat different for individual plans, however, as compared to group plans. Pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition, but genetic information cannot. There are slight limits on the cost of individual policies, but renewals can increase. However, due to your illness, the policy cannot be cancelled. South Dakota Risk Pool is available for health insurance to individuals who have specified problems getting insurance.

Group Health Insurance in South Dakota (SD)

South Dakota regulations provide that qualified individuals cannot be refused or charged more for group health insurance. Certain life changes relating to family or job loss can afford more opportunities to you for group health coverage. Newborn, adopted, and disabled children have special provisions for insurance, if your policy covers dependents. A new employer can wait to offer group coverage; a new HMO can require an affiliation period. Insurance companies are allowed to look back at your medical history for the six months prior to new coverage to determine if you have pre-existing conditions. If one is found, they can require an exclusion period of no more than 12 months. If you have maintained continuous insurance, with no breaks longer than 63 days, you are entitled to creditable coverage.

Small Business Health Insurance in South Dakota (SD)

Small employers of two to 50 employees who apply for small group health insurance cannot be refused coverage and the policy cannot be cancelled due to health problems in the employee group. There are slight limits on the cost of the policies.
