Individual Health Insurance in Rhode Island (RI)

Individual health insurance companies can reject your application for insurance if you have a health problem. However, if you are HIPAA eligible, the insurance companies must offer two plans; you cannot be turned down; and you will not have an exclusion period. Also, if you have had prior continuous insurance of 12 months, with no gap in coverage, the insurers must offer two plans and cannot reject your application for individual coverage. Individual insurers can limit coverage of a pre-existing condition if you have a non-guaranteed issued policy. They can attach an elimination rider or they can impose an exclusion period of no more than 12 months. Pregnancy can be considered pre-existing, but genetic information cannot. It should be pointed out that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island imposes shorter exclusion periods or none at all. Although there are no limits on the cost of premiums, your insurance cannot be cancelled due to your illness.

Group Health Insurance in Rhode Island (RI)

Group health insurance in Rhode Island cannot be denied to qualified persons because of a health problem, nor can they be charged more. There are certain life changes within a family relating to children, marriage, family problems, or job loss that will allow you special opportunities for group coverage. Newborn, adopted and disabled children have special considerations on group policies if they include dependents. A new employer can ask you to wait before signing with group coverage. New HMOs can impose an affiliation period also. Pre-existing conditions can be considered in the six months prior to group coverage. Insurance companies can impose exclusion periods before coverage and the time length varies according to the size of your group. If you have maintained continuous coverage with no lapse of 90 days or more and you will have insured small group coverage, you can get creditable coverage. If you have large group insurance and no lapse longer than 63 days, you get creditable coverage.


Small Business Health Insurance in Rhode Island (RI)

Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees cannot be turned down for small group coverage, nor can their insurance be cancelled due to illness of the employee group. You can, however, have a higher premium based on the health of your group.
