Individual Health Insurance in North Dakota (ND)

Individual insurers are allowed to deny coverage if you have a health problem. If you have been refused, however, you can buy individual insurance from Comprehensive Health Association of North Dakota (CHAND). The same is true of HIPAA eligible individuals. North Dakota requires individual insurance companies to offer basic and standard health plans. If it is determined that you have a pre-existing condition, elimination riders may be attached to policies. Also, exclusion periods of no more than 12 months are allowed. Although your insurance cannot be cancelled due to your illness, there are no limitations on the cost of an individual policy.

Group Health Insurance in North Dakota (ND)

North Dakota regulations provide that group health coverage cannot be refused to qualified individuals even if they have a health problem, nor can they be charged more than others for the coverage. If you have life changes related to children, marriage, family problems or job loss, you may be entitled to special opportunities for group health insurance. Newborns, adopted, and disabled children have special regulations in the state as well. A new employer is allowed to wait before offering group coverage. HMOs are also allowed to impose an affiliation period before coverage begins. Pre-existing conditions have several limitations for protection in North Carolina. The last six months before coverage begins is the look back period for insurance companies to review your medical history for pre-existing conditions. If one exists, they can impose an exclusion period of no more than 12 months for coverage. If you have had continuous coverage with no breaks longer than 63 days, you are entitled to creditable coverage for the condition.


Small Business Health Insurance in North Dakota (ND)

Small employers of two to 50 cannot be refused small group health insurance in North Dakota and insurance companies must offer standardized plans. Your insurance cannot be cancelled due to illness within your insured group. Businesses with two to 25 employees have limits on the variances of their premiums. For groups of over 25, there are no limitations.
