Individual Health Insurance in Montana (MT)

Individual health insurers are free to deny applications from those with health problems. The Montana Comprehensive Health Program will help those who have been denied individual health coverage and also includes HIPAA eligible individuals. Montana regulations provide a low coverage standardized plan be offered to all residents, although insurers can also offer ones with more benefits. Pre-existing conditions can be considered those within the last three years prior to individual coverage. Insurers are allowed to impose exclusion periods with a maximum 12 month time limit and they can also attach elimination riders to the policy. There are no limits placed on premium costs due to health problems of the applicant.


Group Health Insurance in Montana (MT)

Montana regulations provide that if you are eligible for group insurance, you cannot be denied coverage or charged more because of a health problem. Special problems within your family can give you the opportunity for additional enrollment for group coverage. New employers and HMOs can require a waiting period before group coverage begins. Montana allows for pregnancy disability if the insured group has one or more employees. Pre-existing conditions can be investigated by group insurers for the prior six months before joining group coverage; they are allowed a maximum exclusion period of 12 months for the condition. If you have had continuous coverage with no lapse of more than 63 days, the insurer is required to give credit toward the exclusion period.

Small Business Health Insurance in Montana (MT)

Small employers of two to 50 cannot be turned down for small group health insurance, nor can their insurance be cancelled. However, you can be charged higher premiums within certain limits. For larger groups of over 50, there are no limitations on premium costs. Montana requires insurance companies to offer two types of plans: standard (which have required benefits) and basic. A business with two or more employees is allowed to buy group health insurance through an alliance or purchasing pool listed by the state.
