Individual Health Insurance in Missouri (MO)
Individual health insurers are allowed to deny coverage because of health problems unless you are HIPAA eligible. There are several ways that individual insurers can deny coverage on pre-existing conditions of people who are not HIPAA: they can attach an elimination rider; they can impose an exclusion period of up to 24 months; a claim made in the first 24 months allows the insurer to review your history and check for a pre-existing condition and then refuse the claim. Pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition in Missouri. Individual insurers are not required to give credit for continuous coverage toward the exclusion period. Although there are no limits on the cost of individual premiums, your coverage cannot be cancelled if you should become ill. You will be eligible for conversion policies if you had group coverage for more than three months, lost coverage, and do not have access to new group insurance.

Group Health Insurance in Missouri (MO)
Missouri regulations provide that if you are eligible for group health insurance, you cannot be turned down or charged more because of a health problem. There are several life changes relating to marriage, children, family problems, and job loss that can affect your opportunities for group health. If you begin a new job with group health coverage, your new employer is allowed to wait to offer its coverage. A new insurance company can review the last six months of your medical history, prior to acceptance of the new plan, checking for pre-existing conditions. If one is determined, the company may impose an exclusion period with a maximum of 12 months. If you have had continuous coverage, with no breaks of over 63 days, the company must give you credit toward the exclusion period on the pre-existing condition. There are several state governments in Missouri which removed some protections of employees from their group coverage; you should check with your employer about your possible inclusion.
Small Business Health Insurance in Missouri (MO)
Small businesses with two to 50 employees cannot be turned down or cancelled because of the health conditions of their employee groups. Due to the health condition of the group, Missouri allows a limitation of the premium cost of an employee group of three to 25. If the employee group is two or more than 25 people, there are no limits on the premiums.
