Individual Health Insurance in Mississippi (MS)
Individual health policies from private insurers can be denied to applicants with health problems. Individual insurers are allowed to look back at your history for 12 months to determine if you have a pre-existing condition. In the presence of one, they can either impose an exclusion period of no more than 12 months, or they can attach an elimination rider to the policy which permanently denies coverage for the condition. In Mississippi, for individual policies, companies are not required to give credit to exclusion periods for continuous coverage. There are no limits on the cost of an individual policy, but you cannot be cancelled if you should get sick.
Group Health Insurance in Mississippi (MS)
Group health insurance cannot be denied to qualified residents of Mississippi, nor can they be charged more because of a health problem. There are several life changes dealing with marriage, children, family problems, and job loss that can affect your opportunities for group health coverage. A new employer can wait to offer you group health insurance. Group insurance companies are allowed to look back over your medical history for the six months prior to group coverage to check on pre-existing conditions and they are allowed a maximum of 12 months for exclusion of the condition from the beginning of new health coverage. If you maintained coverage of your condition, without a break of over 63 days, you are entitled to creditable coverage.
