Individual Health Insurance in Minnesota (MN)

Individual health insurance has different regulations. An insurance company is allowed to deny your application if you have a medical problem. If you have had treatment for a medical problem in the six months prior to individual coverage, the insurance company can impose an exclusion period of no more than 12 months. No elimination riders can be attached to an individual policy for pre-existing conditions. The premiums of individual policies can be high, depending on the presence of a health problem. However, the policy cannot be cancelled if you become sick. Conversion policies are available if you change jobs and if your prior position had fully insured group coverage.


Group Health Insurance in Minnesota (MN)

Minnesota provides that if you are qualified for group insurance, you cannot be turned away for health reasons. There are several life changes relating to family problems, children, marriage, and job changes that can affect your opportunities for group health. A new employer can wait to offer group health coverage. In the presence of a pre-existing condition, a new insurance company can apply an exclusion of that condition from coverage for the first 12 months of the group plan. If you have had continuous creditable coverage with no breaks of 63 days or longer, you can get credit for the exclusion period on your pre-existing condition. An insurance company is allowed to review your past medical history for the prior six months before coverage.

Small Business Health Insurance in Minnesota (MN)

Small employers with two to 50 employees can apply for small group health insurance and not be denied its coverage; further, if someone becomes sick in the employee group, it cannot be cancelled. However, the price of the premium is not limited and can be higher based on several conditions of the group.


Self-Employed Health Insurance in Minnesota (MN)

The self-employed are not allowed to purchase group health coverage. Affiliation through a business or professional organization for the purpose of acquiring group insurance should be checked with the Minnesota Division of Insurance for regulations.
