Individual Health Insurance in Michigan (MI)
The regulations dealing with individual health insurance vary somewhat in Michigan. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan cannot turn down any applications for individual health policies. The other insurance companies have the right to turn down an applicant due to health problems. In relation to pre-existing conditions, Blue Cross Blue Shield is not allowed to impose exclusion periods if you are HIPAA eligible. For others who are not HIPAA eligible, the rules are different. For HMOs and Blue Cross Blue Shield, the exclusion period may be a maximum of six months; for all other insurance companies, they may impose a maximum 12 month exclusion period on pre-existing conditions. All insurance companies may review your medical records for the prior 6 months before acceptance of individual coverage. Pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition when dealing with individual insurance policies. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan cannot vary their premiums based on community rating, but other insurance companies are free to increase premiums. If you become sick, your individual coverage cannot be cancelled.

Michigan regulations provide that if you are eligible for group health insurance, you cannot be turned down or charged more because of a health problem. There are several life changes relating to family problems, children, marriage, and job changes that can affect your opportunities for group health also. If you have a pre-existing condition, a new insurance company can review your medical records for the last six months only and apply an exclusion of that condition from coverage for varying times according to the type of group plan you have. If you have maintained coverage of your pre-existing condition, without a break of more than 63 days, you are entitled to creditable coverage.
