Individual Health Insurance in Louisiana (LA)

For individual coverage, Louisiana allows insurance companies to turn down your application for a health problem, but Louisiana Health Plan will help if you have been refused. There are several ways in Louisiana that an insurance company can limit coverage on a pre-existing condition: an elimination rider; an exclusion period of 12 months maximum; reviewing your medical records for the prior 12 months before election of the policy, if you make a claim in the first 12 months of coverage. Pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition, although genetic information cannot. As with group coverage, if you had continuous coverage for a pre-existing condition with no lapses over 63 days, credit can be given toward the exclusion period. The cost of the individual policy is based on your health status and may increase with renewal. However, it cannot be cancelled if you become sick. If your insurance company withdraws from the individual health insurance market, your insurance can be cancelled at that time.

Group Health Insurance in Louisiana (LA)

Group health insurance in Louisiana cannot be denied if you have a health problem, nor can you be charged more, provided you qualify. Due to life changes dealing with children, marriage, death, or loss of job, you may be eligible for additional enrollment opportunities. HMOs may require an affiliation period before you will be covered with health insurance and the same is true of a new job position which will offer group coverage. If you have a pre-existing condition, the new insurance can look back over your medical records for six months only. The maximum time for exclusion of a pre-existing condition is 12 months. If you have had continuous coverage with no lapses over 63 days on the condition, you may receive credit for the exclusion period.
