Individual Health Insurance in Indiana (IN)
For individual health insurance, your application for coverage can be turned down because of a health problem. If you have a pre-existing condition, insurance companies can impose a waiting period for coverage of no more than 12 months; however, they are not allowed to attach an elimination rider. In assessing for a pre-existing condition, insurance companies cannot review your medical history for more than the prior six months before coverage started. In addition, if you had small group coverage and had no break of more than 30 days, you will get credit toward your exclusion period. You cannot be cancelled from insurance due to illness, but there are no limitations on the cost of an individual policy. If you have had 90 days of continuous coverage with a small group health plan and leave, you qualify for a conversion policy.
Group Health Insurance in Indiana (IN)
Group health coverage cannot be turned down to qualified individuals because of a health concern and they cannot be charged more for the plan. Due to life changes which deal with children, marriage, death, and job loss, you may have special enrollment opportunities. A new employer can wait to offer group coverage. The look back period for pre-existing conditions is six months and the maximum exclusion period for regular enrollment is 12 months. If you have had continuous coverage or no break of more than 63 days, you will be entitled to creditable coverage. Some Indiana government employees have their protections limited within their group coverage and you should contact your employer to check on your possible inclusion.
