Washington, D.C. Individual Health Insurance (DC)

Insurance companies are allowed to turn down your health insurance application if you have health problem.  For individual policies, pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition, though genetic information cannot. With HIPAA eligibility, CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield must offer you two policies from which to choose. If you have a pre-existing condition and a guaranteed issue policy, the exclusion period has a time limit of 10 months. With a non-guaranteed policy, CareFirst has several ways to exclude a pre-existing condition from coverage. The cost of a policy has no limits and is based on many factors. Your policy will not be cancelled if you get sick.


Washington, D.C. Group Health Insurance (DC)

Group health insurance in Washington, D.C. is assured to you whether you have a health problem or not, provided you are eligible for group insurance. When starting a new job, your new employer may wait to offer group insurance. During a family or medical leave of no more than 16 weeks in a 24 month period, your employer is required to continue your health coverage. Insurance companies can only study the last six months of your medical history to determine if you have a pre-existing condition. There is a maximum exclusion time for pre-existing conditions of 12 months. If you haven’t had a break longer than 63 days, you may be given continuous coverage.


Washington, D.C. Small Business Health Insurance (DC)

Small businesses cannot be turned down for health coverage. If someone in your group gets sick, your insurance cannot be cancelled. However, the premium can vary according to limitations set by the District of Columbia.


Washington, D.C. Self-Employed Health Insurance (DC)

Self-employed individuals may not be eligible for group health insurance. The use of professional associations for attaining group health coverage follows guidelines that can be discussed with the District of Columbia Department of Insurance.
