Connecticut Individual Health Insurance (CT)

Individual health insurance can be denied because of the health conditions of the applicant. Once you have individual coverage, you cannot be denied renewal. If you have a pre-existing condition, however, Connecticut allows insurance companies several means to exclude the problem. In the presence of a medical problem, there are no limitations on the costs of premiums. The state has provisions for high risk individuals between 19 and 64 years old through Connecticut Health Reinsurance Association (HRA). Through the HRA, there are three plans offered by individual health insurance providers. Provisions and details for admission to the high risk pool are numerous and require HIPAA eligibility.

Connecticut Group Health Insurance (CT)

If you are eligible for a group health plan, you cannot be turned down because of a medical problem. However, a new employer can require a waiting period for coverage to begin. HMOs may require an affiliation period before the start of coverage also. Only the prior six months of your medical history can be reviewed by an insurance company for pre-existing conditions. Then, they can only exclude coverage for that condition for 12 months. If you are joining a fully insured group plan and have had no breaks in coverage of 120 days or more, you can be given creditable coverage.

Connecticut Small Business Health Insurance (CT)

Small businesses cannot be turned down for small group coverage, be charged extra for a sick employee, or be cancelled from coverage at the time of renewal.

Connecticut Self-Employed Health Insurance (CT)

If you are self-employed, the state allows you to buy group health insurance, provided you can give proof of self-employment. The state allows a small business (three to 50 employees) to purchase group health insurance through a qualified, statewide alliance or trade association. Because rules are different, it is recommended that you contact the Connecticut Insurance Department for details.
