Healthcare and Fitness in Philadelphia, PA

Although they love to applaud their many sports teams, Philadelphians are largely inactive when it comes to sports participation and physical activity in general, and their lack of physical exertion leaves many unhealthy and overweight.  For this reason, the government has instituted the “Steps to a Healthier Philadelphia” Program, which is a multifaceted plan to improve the well-being of the city.  The program’s focus is the reduction and prevention of Diabetes, Obesity, and Asthma, addressing physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use as some of the major causes for these diseases.  The Steps program is targeted to reach racial and ethnic minorities, people living below the poverty line, those who are uninsured, and people with a disability, all of whom experience a proportionately higher risk for the targeted conditions.

The program began in June of 2006, and pending successful implementation will continue through September of 2008.  Included in the agenda are educational classes for adults as well as children who are at risk for Diabetes, Asthma, and/or Obesity.  The goal is to help Philadelphians understand and improve their health knowledge and modify risk-related behavior. The School District of Philadelphia will also join the cause, with the development of 20 on campus health clubs in the works.  The Steps program will also offer cooking, nutrition, and exercise classes, promoting a healthy lifestyle to all who participate.
