Are you over the age of 65?
Yes   No

While some may only know Indianapolis as the home to the famous Indy-500 racetrack, or as the city that hosts the James Dean Memorial, this Indiana capital has much more.  Indianapolis, the nation’s twelfth largest city, is also a Mecca for music, culture, and art, and is considered to be the center for health care in the midwest.  While the residents aren’t known to be the fittest, it certainly doesn’t seem to be due to lack of government effort.

According to Men’s Fitness 2005 Poll, Indianapolis is actually the 13th Fattest City in the United States.  This status is attributed to poor sports participation and even worse nutrition. The CDC has found that an overwhelming 62 percent of Indianapolis residents exceed a healthy body weight and therefore risk medical problems.  Furthermore, a related study of Indiana inhabitants showed that less than three quarters of the population had been active in the past month, and the rest had not exercised at all.

Indianapolis Health Care

Although the people of Indianapolis aren’t the fittest, the city is actually the midwestern health care hub and houses the state’s only medical school.  Indiana University Medical Center is in fact a noteworthy force in the medical community, as it was the fourth medical school in the country.  With a faculty of more than 1,100, the IUMC contribute to research in a wide range of fields, including Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, genetics, and many more.  Additionally, their School of Nursing is the largest in the country.    Also based in Indianapolis is the national headquarters of the American College of Sports Medicine, which is a physical fitness organization that aims to increase awareness about exercise and physical activity.

The current mayor of Indianapolis has launched an impressive campaign to improve the city’s status as one of the country’s fattest called “Indy in Motion,” which is a citywide health and fitness initiative designed to “get Indianapolis off the couch and out the door!”  The program offers low to no cost activities for all ages and abilities.  Included in this large array of activities being offered throughout the cities parks are yoga, weight training, swimming, walking, Pilates, basketball, softball, aerobics, and tai chi.
