Chadron is a small town of little more than 5,000 located in western Nebraska. It is the home of Chadron State College and the site of Fur Trade Days -- an annual celebration of the town’s heritage of trading fur with the French. The average income of a resident of Chadron is $27,000, and, with more than 20% of the town’s residents being below the poverty line, the cost of living seems to overweigh income in many circumstances. Though Chadron is a small town, it is home to its own college, airport, and hospital. Much of Chadron’s population is composed of individuals of Native American and French heritage.

Chadron, Nebraska Healthcare and Insurance

Because of its rural Nebraska setting, healthcare is often hard to come by in Chadron. While the town is home to its own hospital -- Chadron Community Hospital and Health Services -- the number of practicing physicians in the area is few. As a result, Chadron State College has partnered with the University of Nebraska to offer the Rural Health Opportunities Program. This program is designed to recruit individuals from rural areas that are interested in gaining employment in the healthcare field. The hope is that those individuals will return to rural areas after obtaining their degree to operate their medical practice, therefore providing more healthcare opportunities to residents of town like Chadron where healthcare is not always readily available.
