Arizona Health Insurance (AZ)

Are you over the age of 65?
Yes   No

Arizona denizens are quite proud to be home to one of the oft-cited natural wonders of the world - the Grand Canyon. One thing they are not so proud of? The number of Arizona citizens that are uninsured. As of 2006, 20% of Arizona's over 6 million residents were uninsured. That's higher than the national average of 16%. Of that 20%, almost a quarter are children aged 18 and younger.*

Arizona Individual Health Insurance (AZ)

In the state of Arizona, individual health insurance policies meet with different regulations. Insurance companies are not required to issue an individual policy if you have health problems. They may also permanently withhold insurance coverage on a pre-existing condition by the use of a rider. Pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition, but genetic information cannot. Also, unlike group plans, individual policies do not have to give credit for previous coverage on pre-existing conditions. There are no restrictions on the premiums for individual insurance, but insurance cannot be cancelled if you experience an illness or encounter an accident.

Arizona Self-Employed Health Insurance

In Arizona, self-employed individual cannot buy group insurance, except for the above Healthcare Group of Arizona. Oftentimes, the best recourse for Arizona residents who are self-employed is to secure their own individual or family plan (what's called an IFP). Although these plans don't take into account discounts you would normally receive from a group policy, they can be very reasonable since you are no longer paying a rate calculated across an entire group.

Arizona Group Health Insurance

A health problem cannot prevent you from being eligible for group health insurance in Arizona, and you are also protected from being cancelled from group insurance because of illness. Group and individual conversion insurance policies are open to you for 30 days if you lose your group or individual health insurance. If you have a pre-existing condition and are changing into a new group plan, you may experience an exclusion period, usually no more than 12 months. If you have had continuous coverage, with no breaks of more than 63 days, you are due creditable coverage. New employers and new insurance with an HMO may require a waiting period for coverage to begin.

Small Business Health Insurance in AZ

If you are a small business owner with two to 50 employees, you cannot be turned down for group insurance due to the health of your employees. The same is not true for large business owners with 51 or more employees. For the small group, your premiums can vary according to the health of your employees, but your insurance cannot be cancelled due to the health of an employee. There are no limits on premium variances for large groups. If you are self-employed or a large employer (over 50 employees), with certain requirements, you can apply for Healthcare Group of Arizona. For laws governing association affiliations for the purpose of health insurance, contact the Arizona Department of Insurance (see below).
