Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Anthem BCBS)

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield is a large managed care provider that carries a Blue Cross Blue Shield license in nine states. They are part of the Wellpoint family of health care providers, a health conglomerate that provides coverage to twenty eight million Americans. As part of their merger in 2004, Anthem in fact changed their name to Wellpoint Inc. However, their Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliate operations continue to use the Anthem name, as does the corporate web site.

Anthem provides Blue Cross/Blue Shield managed care services in Connecticut, Indiana, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, New Hampshire and Colorado. Some of these networks span the state, while others are concentrated in metro areas and extend into the outlying portions of those states with indemnity insurance programs. These programs provide access to any physician, or through affiliations with other regional managed care providers. The company also has four subsidiaries in related businesses.

Anthem Life Insurance Solutions

The Anthem Life Insurance Company provides group life insurance and disability insurance to employers seeking products for their employee benefit packages. They also offer third party administrative services for those plans.

Anthem Prescription Management

Anthem Prescription Management provides an online prescription benefit management service for their own health plans and for other health service providers. Plan members can search the insurance company's drug formulary, order drugs online and track their plan usage. Anthem, in turn, can oversee administration of this important benefit for any health provider that contracts with this subsidiary for their service.

One Nation Benefit Administrators

One Nation Benefit Administrators is their subsidiary that provides overall third party administration of health care programs, either for employers with large numbers of enrolled employees or for health care providers who need support with claims processing and benefits tracking.

AdminiStar Federal

AdminiStar Federal oversees Medicare contracts on behalf of the federal government and the states. These contracts are becoming more widespread as managed care providers develop comprehensive coverage through their networks for Medicare recipients. This sort of service is provided in lieu of the Medicare Supplemental Insurance policies A through J, which are piecemeal policies that each fill one of the many gaps that exist in the forty year old Medicare program.

Anthem is one of the larger Blue Cross/ Blue Shield affiliates with multiple contracts. They have done a good job in those areas, such as Maine and parts of Nevada and Colorado where density makes it very difficult to provide comprehensive coverage. They have developed innovative coverage policies that make it possible for almost every state resident to access Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance, even though the health providers themselves may not be part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield network.
